Historic Milestones
1911 • First bank branch was established at Treasury Square in Mombasa on January 1911
• Nairobi Branch was established on Government Road, also in January 1911
1912 • In 1912, when 64 was declared a township and later renamed Eldoret, Standard Chartered Bank opened its third branch in Kenya. This was a semi-permanent structure opened to cater for the country’s agricultural stronghold which was also the country’s main food basked.

1989 • Standard Chartered Bank was listed on the Nairobi Stock Exchange for the first time, offering 21 million shares, the largest single placing at the NSE then

2003 • Standard Chartered started the largest sporting event in Kenya, the Nairobi International Marathon. From a humble beginning with 4,000 participants in 2003, the Standard Chartered Marathon has grown to attract over 15,000 runners and raised millions of shillings for Seeing is Believing, our flagship sustainability initiative.

2007 • The Diva Club Account is launched as the first-women only banking product
2011 • Standard Chartered cemented its commitment to the Kenyan market with the move to a Kes4.3 billion ultra modern headquarters on Chiromo Road. StandardChartered@Chiromo is a green building that is constructed with the aim achieving a GOLD LEED status from the Leadership in Environmental and Energy design (LEED). This is in line with the Bank’s commitment to ‘protecting the environment in all the markers in which it operates.

2012 • 101 years after being founded in Kenya, Standard Chartered Bank is one of the most profitable financial institution with 33 countrywide branches, 90 ATMs countrywide and assets valued at over KShs145 billion.

Innovation & Technology
Pre-Independence, 1950s • The bank invested in an ultra-modern headquarters on Moi Avenue, then known as Government Road at the time. Stanbank House, described by many as ‘imposing’ was the most modern building in the city. This was bank’s headquarters until 2011.

1980s • Standard Chartered has been leading the way in technological innovation. In 1989, SCB introduced the first ATMs services in Kenya then known as Moneylink

1990s • Standard Chartered was the first Bank in Kenya to centralize its operations to interconnect all its branches countrywide. From the centralization, customers could transact from any branch regardless of the location. This was later adopted by other banks as the industry continued to grow

2009 • The Bank introduced mBanking, its mobile banking platform built on Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) technology. mBanking compliments our bank’s philosophy of striving to meet customer needs and lifestyles by offering delivery channels that are in line with current and anticipated future needs.
